How Drywalling and Taping Are Like Bookkeeping and Accounting

Let me tell you a personal story. If you are in construction, I am sure you have seen this kind of thing many times from DIY-ers. And drywallers and tapers will roll their eyes...

We have been renovating our home for the last couple of years. (I see your smirk already.) A few months ago, we decided to re-drywall the ceiling. The drywall and taping job that existed was a DIY by someone else, and we were tired of seeing every single seam in the drywall. We thought, how hard can it be to drywall a ceiling?

It went pretty good. We used 12 ft sheets, so we only had minimal seams. However, the walls were not completely straight, meaning the room was slightly narrower at one end than at the other. And the joists were on a slight angle. We just adjusted the drywall cuts. #ProblemSolved

We thought, #HeyWeCanDoThis! So we decided to re-drywall the walls as well. It started off ok, as bad ideas often do... And then… The floor was level, but the ceiling was not. Then there were studs that weren’t plumb. And windows to cut around. And studs that didn’t even line up at the drywall edge. So we had (still have) all of these butt joints where they should have been tapered. And some of the gaps between the drywall joints were pretty bad, too. To top it off, everything seemed to take forever.

We started to get frustrated. The further we went on our project, the more imperfection we settled for. We were just getting fed up with these ridiculous situations. A drywaller or taper will only need one look to see we did it ourselves. #Oops

We BRIEFLY fantasized about doing the taping ourselves. #NoWay We will be hiring a professional taper. We won’t even touch it.

Here’s the thing: Because of our poor drywall job,  now we can’t just hire any taper. They will need to be very skilled and experienced to make all of our mistakes disappear. So, we know we will be paying quite a bit extra since we will have created so much extra work.

If we had hired someone to do the drywalling for us, it would have been done right and done quickly, and it would have saved us a lot of time and headache. We probably could even have hired someone to do both drywall and taping, and it wouldn’t have been much different than what we will now be paying for taping alone. #Hindsight2020

Some people treat their bookkeeping the same way. They think, how hard can it be, really?

However, businesses really do need a bookkeeper. But if they hire an inexperienced bookkeeper, they will end up paying a lot more to the accountant at tax time, just as we are going to be paying a premium to our taper because of our mistakes. Or worse, the books could be in such a state of disaster that the CRA starts calling and making demands. #OhBoy #LetsHopeNot
